Turin · Flat burrDF83 V2 (Gen 2)

An 83mm flat-burr single-dose grinder with a 550W motor, near-zero retention design, and a burr-upgrade ecosystem that punches well above its price class.

The short version

The DF83 V2 delivers genuine end-game grind quality at a price that has no real competition in the 83mm flat-burr tier — the stock Red Ti burrs are capable, and the SSP upgrade path is well-documented.

Accept that it is a large, heavy machine and that the grind chute can clog if portafilter placement lapses.

Why people buy it

  • 550W motor grinds an 18g dose very fast — faster than most grinders in or above its price tier.
  • Near-zero retention (<0.1g with bellows) makes it genuinely single-dose friendly without RDT as a requirement.

Why they don’t

  • Heavy at ~10.8 kg with no built-in handle — inconvenient to reposition on the counter.
The full tally
  • 550W motor grinds an 18g dose very fast — faster than most grinders in or above its price tier.
  • Near-zero retention (<0.1g with bellows) makes it genuinely single-dose friendly without RDT as a requirement.
  • Gen 2 four-post/four-spring alignment system improves burr concentricity out of the box, and the burr carrier accepts SSP and other aftermarket sets.
  • Comes with a practical accessory kit: 225g hopper, aluminum dosing ring, RDT spray bottle, and modified bellows.
  • Heavy at ~10.8 kg with no built-in handle — inconvenient to reposition on the counter.
  • The fast grind rate can clog the chute if the portafilter is not placed correctly before the motor starts.
  • At 36.5 cm tall (with hopper), it will not fit under low kitchen cabinets without removing the hopper.

What the community knows

Years of owner threads, distilled — strongly recommended.

Delivers genuine espresso performance and build quality at its price tier; SSP burr platform and active refinements create a real upgrade path without vendor lock-in, and low retention plus responsive support earn it workhorse status in its bracket — but lacks the design…

Worth knowing before you buy — Most owners say: put the money into the grinder, not the machine — the DF83 V2 is the grinder that makes that advice work without compromise.

What the DF83 V2 has to offer in terms of performance, build quality, particle distribution, and espresso quality is truly excellent.

DF83 is an excellent grinder that replaced my trusty Eureka Mignon Specialita. It produces consistent grind when you grind with hot start and does not need any RDT.

After using the grinder now for 6 months, I can say that retention is very good: about 0.1 grams, if the bellows is used to blow out the remaining particles after grinding.

Living with it

The part spec sheets skip: counter space, upkeep, and what owners learn later.

drag to look around
DF83 V2 (Gen 2) claims 15.3 × 25.2 cm of a standard 60 cm counter and stands 36.5 cm tall 8.5 cm to spare under standard 45 cm uppers. The small block is a mug; the counter grid is 10 cm.

The honest note — Most owners stay on this platform by upgrading to SSP burrs (MP, HU, or Red Speed) rather than replacing the grinder. Those who outgrow it typically move to a Lagom P64, Niche Duo, or similar single-dose flat-burr machine in the $800–1,200 range.

Feed it right

Week one is dial-in — and stale beans will lose it.

Coffee more than a few weeks past roast won’t extract predictably, and a new grinder gets blamed for it. These burrs lean bright — washed single-origins with real acidity are where they earn their price.

Whole bean, dated, ready for your burrs the week it lands.

Common questions

What burrs does the DF83 V2 come with stock?

The Gen 2 ships with Turin 83mm Red Titanium-coated flat burrs. Earlier V2 units from some distributors included ItalMill stainless steel burrs — confirm with your retailer.

Can I upgrade the burrs?

Yes. The DF83 V2 accepts SSP (MP, HU, Red Speed), Mazzer Super Jolly-standard, and other third-party sets. The original burrs are included if you choose an SSP upgrade at purchase from some retailers.

Is the DF83 V2 the same as the MiiCoffee DF83 Gen 2?

Yes — the underlying machine is manufactured by G-Iota and sold under the Turin, MiiCoffee, and G-Iota brand names depending on region. Specs are identical.

Will it fit under kitchen cabinets?

At 36.5 cm tall with the hopper mounted, clearance is tight under standard 45–50 cm cabinets. Remove the hopper to single-dose and the footprint drops considerably.

How does it compare to the Niche Zero?

The DF83 V2 uses 83mm flat burrs versus the Niche's 63mm conical burrs. The DF83 grinds faster, offers a more open burr-upgrade ecosystem, and is generally cheaper. The Niche has lower workflow friction, a smaller footprint, and a more established single-origin track record with conical flavor characteristics.
