Quick Mill · ThermoblockRetrò (0835)

A compact Italian all-in-one with a built-in 43 mm flat-burr grinder and thermoblock, designed for small kitchens that want genuine bean-to-cup without a super-automatic's complexity.

The short version

The Retrò packs a decent grinder and a proven thermoblock into one of the smallest footprints in the Quick Mill range — a sensible entry point for the single-shot household that also wants fresh grinds.

The thermoblock steam is limited and the plastic housing keeps build longevity modest, so expect to outgrow it as skill develops.

Why people buy it

  • Integrated 43 mm flat-burr grinder eliminates a separate countertop appliance for small kitchens
  • Thermoblock heat-up of roughly 45–60 seconds is genuinely fast for a portafilter machine

Why they don’t

  • Plastic outer body and plastic brew-group housing limit long-term durability and repairability
The full tally
  • Integrated 43 mm flat-burr grinder eliminates a separate countertop appliance for small kitchens
  • Thermoblock heat-up of roughly 45–60 seconds is genuinely fast for a portafilter machine
  • Front-mounted pressure gauge gives real-time brew-pressure feedback unusual at this price tier
  • Side-removable water tank is practical in tight spaces
  • Plastic outer body and plastic brew-group housing limit long-term durability and repairability
  • Thermoblock steam requires a ~15-second switch over and produces weaker pressure than a dedicated steam boiler — a real constraint for milk drinks
  • Timer-based grinder dosing is imprecise; users report needing to weigh every dose for consistency

What the community knows

Years of owner threads, distilled — well regarded.

Praised by space-constrained owners for genuine serviceability—standard E61 group and simple thermoblock internals make tinkering accessible—but integrated grinder and thermoblock ceiling (especially on singles) lock it into the stepping-stone tier; you pay for accessibility…

Design pull2.5

Worth knowing before you buy — Most buyers regret the integrated grinder long before they hit the thermoblock ceiling—budget upfront on a separate burr grinder instead.

Known weak points — Integrated grinder consistency issues documented; thermoblock temperature stability on single shots noted as limiting factor.

Very accessible despite its compact footprint... such a neat and fun piece to work on.

The honest note — Owners who develop taste and skill typically find the thermoblock steam and plastic build the first pain points. Natural upgrades are single-boiler PID machines (Quick Mill Carola, Rancilio Silvia Pro X) or entry HX machines (Quick Mill Andreja) paired with a dedicated midrange grinder.

Before it arrives

What completes this machine — the faded pieces can wait.

Hover any piece for its why.

  • Espresso cups & glassware — Proper demitasse and latte glasses keep the drink hot and look the part.

Feed it right

Week one is dial-in — and stale beans will lose it.

Coffee more than a few weeks past roast won’t extract predictably, and a new machine gets blamed for it. While you learn it, a forgiving medium-light roast keeps dial-in kind — bright enough to taste progress, sweet enough to drink the misses.

No proper grinder yet? Sort that first — it decides more of the cup than the machine does. We ship whole bean, roast-dated, timed so it lands fresh the week your burrs do.

Roasted to order, daily, in Ajax, Ontario · ships Canada-wide. We’re the roastery behind this database — measuring the machines is how we make sure the coffee gets a fair shot.

Common questions

Can the Retrò brew and steam at the same time?

No. It uses a single-circuit thermoblock system. You must finish brewing, then switch to steam and wait approximately 15 seconds before the wand is ready.

What portafilter size does the Retrò use?

58 mm, the same as many commercial and prosumer machines. Two portafilters are included in the box.

Does the built-in grinder produce espresso-fine grinds?

Yes, the 43 mm flat-burr grinder can reach espresso fineness, but its timer-based dosing is imprecise. Weighing each dose on a scale is strongly recommended for consistent results.

How long does it take to heat up?

Approximately 45–60 seconds to reach brewing temperature according to Quick Mill and European retailers. Switching from brew to steam mode takes a further ~15 seconds.

Is there temperature control (PID)?

No. The Retrò uses a double thermostatic control with a safety thermo-fuse but does not include PID. Brew temperature is not user-adjustable.
