Acaia · Flat burrOrbit
Acaia's first grinder is a 64 mm flat-burr, single-dose platform co-developed with Weber Workshops, built around RPM Stability Control, a knocking chute, and Bluetooth grind-by-weight integration with the Acaia Lunar scale.
The short version
The Orbit is a precisely-toleranced, app-driven 64 mm flat-burr single-doser that competes squarely with the Lagom P64 and Zerno at the $1,500–$1,700 prosumer tier.
Accept that the feature depth lives mostly in a companion app and that the price of entry is steep for what the cup alone delivers.
Why people buy it
- Near-zero retention by design: the knocking chute plus reverse-spin auto-purge leaves at most a few tenths of a gram behind
- Burr-swappable platform — ships with 64 mm Mazzer 33M or SSP MP/Lab Sweet, and accepts the full ecosystem of third-party 64 mm sets
Why they don’t
- Steep price — street pricing sits at $1,450–$1,700 USD, a premium the cup quality alone cannot always justify against the Lagom P64 at a lower figure
The full tally
- Near-zero retention by design: the knocking chute plus reverse-spin auto-purge leaves at most a few tenths of a gram behind
- Burr-swappable platform — ships with 64 mm Mazzer 33M or SSP MP/Lab Sweet, and accepts the full ecosystem of third-party 64 mm sets
- Variable RPM (600–1,500) controlled via Bluetooth app enables flavor-profiling experiments and quieter low-speed operation
- Grind-by-weight closes the dosing loop entirely when paired with an Acaia Lunar scale, eliminating pre-weighing
- Steep price — street pricing sits at $1,450–$1,700 USD, a premium the cup quality alone cannot always justify against the Lagom P64 at a lower figure
- Advanced features require the companion app; the physical interface is a single multifunction button with LED feedback, which limits on-grinder control
- Relatively modest 200 W motor means a recommended 60-second-on / 30-second-off duty cycle, limiting throughput for back-to-back batches
What the community knows
Years of owner threads, distilled — a niche favourite.
Premium single-dose 64mm with excellent UX and grind precision, but app dependency, limited long-term field history, and crowded pricing bracket (Lagom P100, Monolith Max, used Mazzer Philos) prevent default recommendation despite strong engineering—niche favourite among those…

Worth knowing before you buy — Most owners wish Acaia had marketed the engineering depth more visibly upfront instead of leading with "advanced features"—grinder deserves more credit for its core build than its app novelty.
Known weak points — Early alignment QC issues out of box (circa 2022–23, reportedly resolved); permanent retention accumulation on burr carriers requiring regular cleaning; grind-by-weight firmware implementation imprecise.

Living with it
The part spec sheets skip: counter space, upkeep, and what owners learn later.
The honest note — Owners upgrading from a Niche Zero or DF64 will find the Orbit a genuine step up in flat-burr workflow polish and retention. Those who outgrow it typically move to the Weber EG-1 (larger motor, commercial pedigree) or the Kafatek Monolith Flat for maximum clarity, accepting that both cost roughly double.

Feed it right
Week one is dial-in — and stale beans will lose it.
Coffee more than a few weeks past roast won’t extract predictably, and a new grinder gets blamed for it. A balanced burr set: rotate origins freely — it will keep up.

Common questions
Can I swap to SSP burrs in the Acaia Orbit?
Yes. The Orbit ships with a choice of Mazzer 33M, SSP Multipurpose, or SSP Lab Sweet V3 burr sets, and is compatible with other aftermarket 64 mm burrs. This is a documented and supported swap, not a voiding modification.
Does the Orbit work without the app?
Yes — out of the box it functions as a single-dose grinder with a single multifunction button that cycles through three presets. The Bluetooth companion app unlocks variable RPM control, grind profiles, and grind-by-weight with the Lunar scale, but none of these are required for daily use.
What is the recommended duty cycle?
Acaia recommends 60 seconds of run time followed by a 30-second rest. This limits high-volume throughput but is more than adequate for home single-dosing use.
Does the Orbit have anti-static features?
The Orbit does not include a built-in ion generator. Instead it relies on mechanical static dissipation by design — the knocking chute and grounding path are engineered to minimise static. An external ion beam (e.g., Acaia Ion Beam accessory) can be added for challenging conditions.
What dosing cup does the Orbit ship with?
It ships with a 58 mm portafilter dosing cup (with a magnetic pad) in black or white. The cup magnetically locks to the base for hands-free grinding directly into the portafilter.
