Decent Espresso · ThermoblockDecent DE1+

The entry-level member of Decent's DE1 family, sharing the same software-driven pressure-and-flow profiling platform as the DE1PRO but rated for lighter home use at up to 10 shots per day.

The short version

A software-first espresso machine that lets you manipulate temperature, pressure, and flow in real time with a precision no traditional boiler machine can touch at this price.

Accept that the 10,000-shot internals place it firmly in the home tier — anyone expecting commercial durability needs the DE1PRO.

Why people buy it

  • Full pressure, flow, and temperature profiling in a single compact chassis — a capability that remains rare even among machines costing far more
  • Real-time sensor feedback (pressure, flow, weight via Bluetooth scale) displayed graphically on the tablet during every shot

Why they don’t

  • Rated to only 10,000 shots — roughly 3 years at 10 shots per day — vs. the 200,000-shot rating of the DE1PRO; longevity gap is real
The full tally
  • Full pressure, flow, and temperature profiling in a single compact chassis — a capability that remains rare even among machines costing far more
  • Real-time sensor feedback (pressure, flow, weight via Bluetooth scale) displayed graphically on the tablet during every shot
  • Open-source API and active community means free third-party apps, shared profiles from award-winning baristas, and continuous firmware improvements
  • All-metal chassis with porcelain drip tray and water tank — no plastic in the water path
  • Rated to only 10,000 shots — roughly 3 years at 10 shots per day — vs. the 200,000-shot rating of the DE1PRO; longevity gap is real
  • Vibratory pump and boilerless design mean steam power is adequate but not commanding for back-to-back milk drinks
  • Now discontinued in favor of the DE1PRO, so long-term parts support is less certain than for the current lineup

Worth knowing before you buy — Most owners say grind quality matters more than the machine; put half the budget toward a better grinder first.

Known weak points — Solenoid valve failures reported in early units; heating element lifespan varies; Bluetooth connectivity issues on some firmware revisions; water line calcium buildup affecting group head.

The DE1's combination of extraction control and sensor feedback provides an unparalleled opportunity for learning about espresso.

Living with it

The part spec sheets skip: counter space, upkeep, and what owners learn later.

drag to look around
Decent DE1+ claims 21 × 35 cm of a standard 60 cm counter and stands 33 cm tall 12 cm to spare under standard 45 cm uppers. The small block is a mug; the counter grid is 10 cm.

The honest note — Owners who push volume or want better steam headroom move to the DE1PRO, which shares identical software but carries commercial-grade internals rated to 200,000 shots. Those chasing absolute shot quality within the Decent ecosystem are already at the ceiling — the next step is the DE1XL/DE1XXL.

Before it arrives

What completes this machine — the faded pieces can wait.

Descaler & backflush kit Electric boilers scale up and grouts gunk up — a descaler plus backflush routine is what keeps the machine alive for a decade.

  • Descaler & backflush kit — Electric boilers scale up and grouts gunk up — a descaler plus backflush routine is what keeps the machine alive for a decade.
  • Coffee scale with timer — Espresso is a ratio. A 0.1g scale with a built-in timer is the single biggest consistency upgrade for any manual machine.
  • Espresso cups & glassware — Proper demitasse and latte glasses keep the drink hot and look the part.

Feed it right

Week one is dial-in — and stale beans will lose it.

Coffee more than a few weeks past roast won’t extract predictably, and a new machine gets blamed for it. While you learn it, a forgiving medium-light roast keeps dial-in kind — bright enough to taste progress, sweet enough to drink the misses.

No proper grinder yet? Sort that first — it decides more of the cup than the machine does. We ship whole bean, roast-dated, timed so it lands fresh the week your burrs do.

Roasted to order, daily, in Ajax, Ontario · ships Canada-wide. We’re the roastery behind this database — measuring the machines is how we make sure the coffee gets a fair shot.

Common questions

Is the DE1+ still available to buy new?

Based on current sources, Decent Espresso has discontinued the DE1+ in favor of the DE1PRO, which uses heavier-duty components but runs the same software. Check decentespresso.com/price for the current lineup.

How many shots is the DE1+ rated for?

Decent rates the DE1+ to 10,000 shots — appropriate for up to about 10 espressos per day in a home setting. The DE1PRO and higher models carry a 200,000-shot professional rating.

Does the DE1+ require the tablet to operate?

No. The machine can run its default espresso recipe using buttons on the group head controller without the tablet. The tablet (or a compatible Android/iPhone app) is required to set custom profiles and view real-time shot data.

Can I use a Bluetooth scale for gravimetric dosing?

Yes. A compatible Bluetooth scale connects to the app and stops the shot automatically at your target weight. Decent's own Half Decent Scale is guaranteed to work; community members also support several third-party scales including Acaia Pearl, Acaia Lunar, and Felicita Arc.

What grinder does the DE1+ use?

The DE1+ uses a standard 58mm portafilter — confirmed via the DE1 overview page — so it pairs with any grinder capable of dialing in for espresso. Given the machine's profiling ceiling, a premium single-dose flat-burr grinder will extract the most value from the platform.
