Breville · ThermoblockBarista Touch (BES880)
An all-in-one semi-automatic with an integrated conical burr grinder, touchscreen interface, and auto-frothing wand that gets beginners to drinkable lattes in under a minute — without requiring them to own a separate grinder or learn to steam milk.
The short version
The Barista Touch is a capable, feature-dense machine for the household that wants good milk drinks fast and is not interested in dialing in shots on separate gear.
Accept that the single-boiler ThermoJet means you sequence your brew and steam rather than run them in parallel, and that the 54mm portafilter and integrated grinder will eventually feel limiting if espresso craft becomes the point.
Why people buy it
- Integrated conical burr grinder with 30 grind settings eliminates the need for a separate grinder at this price tier
- Auto-frothing wand with adjustable temperature and texture settings handles milk hands-free and consistently
Why they don’t
- Single-boiler design means you must finish the shot, then wait for the system to re-heat to steam temperature — no simultaneous brew and steam
The full tally
- Integrated conical burr grinder with 30 grind settings eliminates the need for a separate grinder at this price tier
- Auto-frothing wand with adjustable temperature and texture settings handles milk hands-free and consistently
- ThermoJet 3-second heat-up and touchscreen with 5 pre-programmed plus 8 customizable drink slots make daily workflow genuinely low-friction
- PID temperature control with 8 programmable brew temperatures (190–205 F) gives more extraction range than most machines at this price
- Single-boiler design means you must finish the shot, then wait for the system to re-heat to steam temperature — no simultaneous brew and steam
- Proprietary 54mm portafilter limits the aftermarket basket and accessory ecosystem versus the industry-standard 58mm
- Integrated grinder design ties grind quality to the machine; as espresso skills develop, the grinder becomes the ceiling, not the boiler

Worth knowing before you buy — Most owners wish they'd spent the difference on a better grinder instead.
Known weak points — Steam solenoid reliability questions in owner forums; touchscreen durability concerns in multi-year ownership threads; single-boiler thermal lag during milk stretching.

Living with it
The part spec sheets skip: counter space, upkeep, and what owners learn later.
The honest note — Most owners upgrade when they want to pull manual shots with real grind control or steam milk simultaneously. Natural next steps are the Breville Dual Boiler paired with a dedicated midrange grinder (e.g. Baratza Sette 270 or Eureka Mignon Specialita), or a used HX machine with a Niche Zero or DF64.

Before it arrives
What completes this machine — the faded pieces can wait.
Descaler & backflush kit — Electric boilers scale up and grouts gunk up — a descaler plus backflush routine is what keeps the machine alive for a decade.
- Descaler & backflush kit — Electric boilers scale up and grouts gunk up — a descaler plus backflush routine is what keeps the machine alive for a decade.
- Coffee scale with timer — Espresso is a ratio. A 0.1g scale with a built-in timer is the single biggest consistency upgrade for any manual machine.
- Espresso cups & glassware — Proper demitasse and latte glasses keep the drink hot and look the part.
Feed it right
Week one is dial-in — and stale beans will lose it.
Coffee more than a few weeks past roast won’t extract predictably, and a new machine gets blamed for it. While you learn it, a forgiving medium-light roast keeps dial-in kind — bright enough to taste progress, sweet enough to drink the misses.

Common questions
Can I use pre-ground coffee in the Barista Touch?
Yes. The machine includes a bypass doser that lets you add pre-ground coffee directly to the portafilter, bypassing the integrated grinder entirely.
Can the Barista Touch brew and steam at the same time?
No. It is a single-boiler machine. You pull the shot first, then the system switches to steam temperature. Expect roughly a 30–60 second wait between brewing and steaming.
Does the Barista Touch have a 58mm portafilter?
No. It uses a proprietary 54mm stainless steel portafilter. This limits aftermarket basket options compared to industry-standard 58mm machines.
How many custom drinks can I save on the Barista Touch?
The machine comes with 5 pre-programmed cafe favorites and allows you to save up to 8 customized drink recipes with your preferred grind amount, milk temperature, and milk texture.
Is the Barista Touch plumbable?
Not officially. It uses a removable 67 oz internal water tank. Third-party plumbing modifications exist but void the warranty.
