Ascaso · ThermoblockSteel Duo Plus
A dual-thermoblock, dual-PID semi-automatic built by hand in Barcelona that lets you pull a shot and steam milk at the same time — without the footprint, electrical demands, or price of a traditional dual-boiler.
The short version
The Steel Duo Plus carves out a genuine sweet spot: thermoblock speed and simultaneous brew-steam in a compact, well-built chassis for around $2,000.
Accept that it is not a dual-boiler — steam power and thermal mass are real-world thermoblock-grade, not E61 HX- or prosumer dual-boiler-grade.
Why people buy it
- True simultaneous brew-and-steam from two independent thermoblocks — no waiting to switch modes between shots
- Compact 26.7 cm wide footprint with a side-access water tank that fits corner counters other dual-function machines cannot
Why they don’t
- Ships with a 20-amp (NEMA 5-20P) plug on North American units — many home kitchens lack a 20A outlet, requiring an adapter or rewire
The full tally
- True simultaneous brew-and-steam from two independent thermoblocks — no waiting to switch modes between shots
- Compact 26.7 cm wide footprint with a side-access water tank that fits corner counters other dual-function machines cannot
- Ships turn-key with a competition shower screen, walnut-handled bottomless portafilter, five precision baskets, and two steam tips
- Dual PID holds brew temperature to 1°C precision; built-in shot timer and programmable volumetrics reduce shot-to-shot guesswork
- Ships with a 20-amp (NEMA 5-20P) plug on North American units — many home kitchens lack a 20A outlet, requiring an adapter or rewire
- Thermoblock steam is capable but not as fast or powerful as a dedicated steam boiler; back-to-back milk drinks for a crowd will feel the limit
- Polycarbonate water tank has drawn complaints about absorbing odours over time; no plumb-in option to sidestep the issue

Worth knowing before you buy — Most owners who briefly consider upgrades (Profitec, Rancilio) ultimately stay—the machine punches above the typical 5-year regret threshold for this price point.
Known weak points — Water outlet chemical smell (isolated, warranty-covered); steam wand 20-second ramp-up post-brewing (design limitation, not failure).

Living with it
The part spec sheets skip: counter space, upkeep, and what owners learn later.
The honest note — Most owners outgrow the thermoblock steam ceiling when regularly making four or more milk drinks in a row — the natural move is toward a heat-exchanger or dual-boiler machine (Lelit Bianca, ECM Synchronika, Rocket Appartamento). Those wanting deeper shot profiling will feel the lack of flow or pressure control.

Before it arrives
What completes this machine — the faded pieces can wait.
Descaler & backflush kit — Electric boilers scale up and grouts gunk up — a descaler plus backflush routine is what keeps the machine alive for a decade.
- Descaler & backflush kit — Electric boilers scale up and grouts gunk up — a descaler plus backflush routine is what keeps the machine alive for a decade.
- Coffee scale with timer — Espresso is a ratio. A 0.1g scale with a built-in timer is the single biggest consistency upgrade for any manual machine.
- WDT distribution tool — Breaks up clumps before tamping — a cheap fix for channeling on any portafilter machine.
- Espresso cups & glassware — Proper demitasse and latte glasses keep the drink hot and look the part.
Feed it right
Week one is dial-in — and stale beans will lose it.
Coffee more than a few weeks past roast won’t extract predictably, and a new machine gets blamed for it. While you learn it, a forgiving medium-light roast keeps dial-in kind — bright enough to taste progress, sweet enough to drink the misses.

Common questions
Does the Steel Duo Plus require a 20-amp outlet?
North American units ship with a NEMA 5-20P (20A) plug. You will need a dedicated 20A circuit or a 15A adapter (which may limit peak steam performance). Verify your outlet before purchase.
Can it really steam milk and pull a shot at the same time?
Yes — two independent thermoblocks handle brew and steam circuits simultaneously with no temperature crossover or recovery wait. It is a genuine dual-function workflow, not a sequential switch like a single-boiler.
How long does it actually take to be ready to brew?
The machine produces steam quickly (under a minute) and can pull a drinkable shot in roughly 3–5 minutes. Full thermal stability of the group and baskets takes closer to 10–12 minutes for the most consistent extraction.
Is the Duo Plus plumbable?
No. It runs on a 2-litre side-removable reservoir only. There is no plumb-in option.
What grinder does the Steel Duo Plus deserve?
At minimum a capable midrange espresso grinder — something like a Eureka Mignon Specialita or Niche Zero. The dual PID and programmable volumetrics will expose the limitations of an entry-level grinder quickly.
